Martins Makes Nigeria Squad for African Cup of Nation

Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins has been included in his country's 23 man team for this month's Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Shaibu Amodu had delayed naming his final squad while Martins' fitness was assessed.

Martins the ex Newcastle United player who now plays for Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga had been receiving treatment for a shin injury, Hoffenheim striker Chinedu Obasi has been dropped from the final list of players to make way for Martins.

Obafemi Martins who has seemed to be going through toughs times recently with stories of financial debt circulating in the Newspapers as well as having surgery for an injury, should be pleased that at least his fortunes for Nigeria on the field seemed to have improved after scoring that crucial goal against Kenya in the final crunch match that led to Nigeria's qualification for the 2010 world cup in South Africa.

Along with Martins, Joseph Yobo, Danny Shittu and Yusuf Mohammed who are also recovering from long-term injuries have also been included in the team They join Portsmouth striker Nwankwo Kanu who is set to make his sixth appearance at the tournament.

Nigeria will be going to Angola with a team made up completely of foreign based players. The Super Eagles begin their Group C campaign against defending champions Egypt on 12 January before taking on Benin and then Mozambique.

Midfielders: Nwankwo Kanu (Portsmouth, England), John Mikel Obi (Chelsea, England), Dickson Etuhu (Fulham, England) Sani Kaita (Lokomotiv Moscow, Russia) Yusuf Atanda Ayila (Dynamo Kiev, Ukraine), Oluwaseyi George Olofinjana (Hull City, England), Kalu Uche (Almeria, Spain).
